2025年04月22日 College of Business and Public Management YutongLiu student Universities are increasingly adopting comprehensive sustainability strategies that include renewable energy initiatives, waste-reduction programs, and circular economy practices. A significant aspect of this movement involves enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem health on campus grounds. For instance, the University of Illinois is managing its green spaces by incorporating native plant species, minimizing pesticide and fertilizer use, and reducing mowing frequency. These efforts are designed to support pollinator populations and strengthen local ecosystems.

Similarly, University College London (UCL) has launched the “Wild Bloomsbury” initiative, which aims to create 10,000 square meters of biodiverse green space by 2024. This project is intended to establish critical habitats for wildlife, provide recreational areas for students, and improve the campus's resilience against climate change impacts.

To support SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, I initiated a sustainable action focused on improving the recycling system at our campus delivery station. While a recycling area already exists, it lacks clear classification, often leading to improper waste disposal. To tackle this, I proposed a refined sorting system with separate collection bins for cardboard boxes, foam packaging, and plastic wrappers. Each bin is labeled clearly in both text and icons, and a QR code is printed below each label.
When scanned, the QR code directs users to mini tutorials: for example, how to flatten cardboard boxes to save space, or how to remove tape from foam boxes for cleaner recycling. Students are reminded of this process when picking up packages using their Taobao ID, and successful participation is rewarded with a green points system—redeemable for small incentives like discount coupons. I also suggested involving volunteers during peak hours to guide others in proper sorting, and to host sustainability talks and poster campaigns to raise awareness.
Through this action, I aim to make sustainable packaging disposal an everyday habit on campus, not just a one-time campaign.
